Cryptography on the Internet

Welcome to our cryptography page.  This web site will contain in depth information on cryptography and the impact it has on the internet.

In short, cryptography is the science of scrambling text so that no one but the intended recipient can unscramble it.  Anyone who intercepts an encrypted message cannot not unscramble it and will find it useless.

Introduction:

The Internet has made an incredible amount of information available to the average computer user at home, in business, and in education.  For many people, having access to this information is no longer just an advantage, it is now essential.  Yet connecting a private network to the Internet can expose critical or confidential data to malicious attack from anywhere in the world. All users who connect their computers to the Internet must be aware of these dangers, their implications and how to protect their data and their critical systems.

These attacks can include hacking into databases for confidential information such as addresses and social security numbers.  Ones private information can be invaded and a sense of security will be lost.  Other information that can be stolen include credit card numbers, with which hackers use to commit fraud and other crimes.  Not only can hackers steal information, but they can intercept and stop the transmitting or receiving of information.  The users may never even know that something has gone wrong.

There are a few different solutions to this.  Some other possible solutions, besides cryptography include a firewall, tamper detection, and authentication.
